My first obsession when I was a child, was computers games. I remember spending hours playing MS-DOS videos games. Even without Internet, I learned about all these games and software from buying PC magazines that came with CDs containing games and software demos. I’m also good at building/creating things, when I was a child, I played with my dad’s tools, and with scrap materials, I crafted a bow and arrow and a billy cart, among other things.
Then, music came into my life, I learned how to play the drums by ear, and my best friend knew how to sing and play the electric guitar. We started our first music band in school with another friend who played the bass. We played Nirvana covers as well as original songs and performed in multiple gigs around Santiago. I learned how to use Dreamweaver and created my first website for my band.
After High School, I decided to pursue the Associate Degree of Computer Applications Programmer that the INACAP University offered. After I graduated, I had my first professional experience as a Web Programmer in a Chilean company where I increased my Web knowledge by developing professional business websites for companies and individuals.
In 2010, we started a new band called “The ReAktion” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_ReAktion). We recorded our first EP “BeLIEve in rEVOLution” and played in many venues in Santiago. In 2011 we decided to travel to Vancouver, Canada using the Working Holiday Visa. After many shows, we met the legendary producer Garth Richardson who recorded our new album “Selknam”.
We then signed with the promoting agency Mach2point8ent who booked our first U.S. tour “Art of Fury” with the nu-metal band “Otep” which covered many cities in the U.S. during 2015. The last show of this tour was in the famous Roxy Theatre (West Hollywood) where we signed with the record label “Mainia Recordings”, in Los Angeles, California.
Later, I left the band to pursue my own dreams. I moved to Colorado and decided to get an undergraduate Bachelor of Innovation degree in Game Design and Development at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. After a year, I started working for the university as a student for the OIT department. I was later offered to become a full-time staff member and continue my studies as a part-time student. In this position, I have solved multiple problems with creative web solutions and greatly increased my Web Programming knowledge.
I have built many devices, a custom rack to easily move my audio equipment for playing live, a custom double-kick pedal holder to keep the drums from moving on the stage, furniture made out of pallets, and much more. I have never stopped learning, creating, and solving, the life of a web developer is a life of non-stop education and staying on top of trends, that’s why I enjoy programming and creating, there are always new challenges, and as a creator and problem solver, I’m happy to learn new skills and programming technologies to create solutions.
The Bachelor of Innovation (BI) is a family of degrees with a common innovation core shared across majors in a wide range of areas. The BI program is an internationally renowned unique family of degrees with an innovation core applied in many fields.
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) is the first school to offer a bachelor’s degree with a core on innovation. Innovation, the transformation of ideas into impact, is a process that can be taught. It is a process that involves not just creativity, but also the skills to work with others to move that idea forward and implement it for business and/or social impact. It is a process with a place for everyone’s talents and personality types. It is a process that often involves working with people from many fields and perspectives.
One major component of the program is multi-disciplinary innovation teams. These teams work hard on real projects with companies interested in the innovative insights that only BI students can offer. Many companies in the community engage students in a variety of innovative projects. The ability to team with the community is a cornerstone of this program but is nothing new for UCCS, a college recognized for its nationally leading community engagement. The strong multi-disciplinary team dynamic inherent to the BI program provides critical experience working across fields and across age groups. Further advantages include a positive, diverse social network as a valuable resource for students.
“To develop a complete mind: Study the art of science; study the science of art. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else” – Leonardo DaVinci
While I was the drummer for the Chilean band "The ReAktion" I had many projects in my head that I wanted to develop, but having the wrong idea that I should only stick to one field at a time stopped me from pursuing most of those ideas. But sometimes, my urge for creating was stronger, so while we were touring in the United States, I managed to learn Quartz Composer programming and created reactive visual compositions that would be triggered from each drum beat using a MIDI interface that sends the drum signals to the computer and then have Quartz Composer use those MIDI signals to change the visuals. The idea was to have "live" visuals projected in the background that would react to each drum beat showing different colors and shapes when playing live with the band.
I left the band in 2015 to pursue my own dreams. I moved to Colorado and choose to get an undergraduate Bachelor of Innovation (BI) degree in Game Design and Development (GDD) at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). I've learned about different awesome fields in my GDD core classes, such as techniques in game design, game programming, concept art, 3D modeling, and animation, and as a musician, I want to produce the music for my video games. I am an innovator competent in transforming ideas into impact and I believe that innovation occurs at the intersection of multiple fields, disciplines, and cultures, by combining existing concepts to create excellent, innovative ideas. The Medici Effect is a term coined by Frans Johansson used throughout various industries to describe innovation that happens when disciplines and ideas intersect.
I adopted a new mindset freeing my mind from self restrictive ideas to let my creativity flow. I am an innovator that captures ideas, works effectively with diverse teams, and problem solves for the greater good. The unique team-teaching model of the BI classes taught me how to think outside of the box to create innovative ideas to solve problems. With the multiple teams that I worked with, which consisted of students from different majors, we had the opportunity to intersect our knowledge, disciplines, and ideas to help local businesses grow with new innovative ideas.
In one of my teams, we helped our client Dr. Lee design a game-based App focused on physical activity promotion with the help of a journey/quest game mechanic that users play through by engaging in physical activity. Dr. Lee was researching mood in relation to physical activity. In another team, we helped our client Lisa Kavanaugh get more funds for her company, Blue Lion Animal Sanctuary, to provide a loving, secure, and comfortable home to dogs who have been abused, neglected, or discarded for whatever reason. We found that the objectives of the "American Humane Second Chance" grant aligned perfectly with Lisa's company. Our team also wrote the complete application including all the required information and paperwork so Lisa could simply apply for the grant. In another team, I used my web development skills and delivered a microphone database site for the "The Global Z Recording Project" company (www.globalzrecording.org/microphonedatabase). They needed an Internet/Cloud-based solution to store data on how different microphones respond when recording a variety of instruments by creating multiple database entries with microphone characteristics, information, photos, and audio files. And in my last BI class team, we helped Dr. Kristine Hembre grow her business, "Flow Caregiver Coaching", by reaching out to clients and programs that would benefit from the services she offers. Our team created engaging content for her business social media accounts, recorded a professional 2-minute video with chroma backgrounds where Dr. Hembre offers her services, and we organized an event held at UCCS tailored to people that could benefit from her services.
I want to exit the industry having held a position as a Senior Web Programmer with a great catalog of custom created Web Applications and innovative Web solutions, and as a musician and game developer, I want to create multiple video games with appealing visuals with self-composed sounds and music that makes the players feel multiple emotions, and I want to join or form a new band and tour around Europe.
All the experience gained from working with different teams with members from different majors, plus all the experience gained from working with business owners and companies, plus all the Game Design and Development knowledge, my prior studies, web programming experience, and passion for music together with my creative and problem-solving mindset, gives me a huge toolbox with a unique mix of abilities, talents, skills, and competencies that I'm ready to use to shape my future and the future of the people around me.
